NCLEX Practice Questions About CVD

I'd like to share some Practice test questions for those who will be taking their NCLEX-RN exam. Today's topics would cover Cardiovascular Disorders or CVD's together with the Answers and the Rationales.

I will also share some test taking skills when answering questions and I really hope this will help you prepare for the nclex-rn exam.

Question #1

1. We all know that the heart is a muscle that pumps blood to all the cells and organs in our body.  And since it's an organ and muscle by itself, it also needs to receive fresh oxygenated blood in order for it to survive.  Now my question is, when do the arteries of the heart (coronary) first receive oxygenated blood flow?

a. During inhalation
b. During systole
c. During diastole
d. During exhalation

Answer #1

The Correct answer is C. During diastole. It's a given fact that during the systolic part of heart contraction, it's possible that the arteries receive blood, but the majority of blood supply is during the diastolic contraction of the heart.

Fortunately, we all know that breathing cycle is not related to blood flow, because it's confined with the gas exchange of CO2 and O2 which makes oxygenated and unoxygenated blood.

Test taking tip #1

Use the process of elimation of two opposing forces. We can see that we have 4 options with 2 options having the opposite of each (systole vs diastole and exhalation vs inhalation). By eliminating irrelevant answers (breathing is not relevant to blood flow) then we are left with 2 choices (systole and diastole). And if we are still not sure of the answer, we can guess and because we now have 2 choices left we have increased the chances of getting the correct answer by as much as 50%.
